Food and Dining | Bilpin Region | Blue Mountains | Cabins | Book Now

There are countless unlisted firetrails around the Bilpin – Mt. Tomah region that are excellent for two wheeled pedal adventures (or walks). Below are a list of the better known tracks.

Mt. Banks Walls

Probably the most spectacular ride you will ever do! Featuring 11km of cliff top riding along a service trail that begins at Mt. Banks Picnic area. The trail heads east along the Grose Valley with numerous lookouts and spots to stop for lunch. An all round great ride!

Pattersons Ridge to Burralow Swamp

This fire-trail heads out along Patterson’s Ridge towards Burralow Swamp at a fairly straight forward pace. Finally it drops steeply down into the lush swamp area where there are options to continue to either Kurrajong Heights or Bowen Mountain. Both are extensive climbs. Burralow Swamp and Patterson’s Ridge fire trail can be accessed by 4WD (and some 2WDs) from Kurrajong Heights so there is potential for a car shuffle if you don’t feel like riding up the steep hill. Either way, make sure you explore the swamp and nearby Bulcammatta Falls!

Newnes Area

There is an extensive network of service roads on the Newnes Plateau that offer good riding options and most are 2WD accessible. The popular glow-worm tunnel is a good option, but take a map.

Secret Blue Mountains

Most visitors to the Blue Mountains are familiar with popular locations like the Three Sisters, Wentworth Falls or Jenolan Caves. While these places offer some great sights and are well established they also attract a large amount of people. As the bus loads of tourists pour into Katoomba every morning, anyone wishing to escape to the mountains for some rest and relaxation might begin to feel like they haven’t even left the city.

Wollemi Wilderness Retreat is situated away from the busy tourist centre of the Blue Mountains in an area of gorgeous bushland that borders the forgotten land of the Wollemi Wilderness. Our private sanctuary provides a completely stress free alternative where you can just relax and forget about day-to-day life.

What’s-more the Bilpin and Mt. Tomah regions (situated in the northern Blue Mountains) have a range of excellent attractions as well – such as the famous Zig-Zag Railway, the beautiful Mt. Tomah Botanical Gardens or the quiet heratige village of Mt. Wilson. All of these are accessible via the beautiful and scenic drive along Bells Line of Road which winds its way through some of the most spectacular Blue Mountains scenery to be found. As you take the journey through this impressive wilderness you will notice a scattering of small communities along the way. These quaint Blue Mountains outposts have built their livelyhood on fruit-growing and farming, retaining the regions unique feel and pace through these more traditional lifestyles.

Sunrise over the Upper Grose Valley - about 20min drive from Wollemi Wilderness Retreat.

There are also many breathtaking natural locations only a short drive from Wollemi Wilderness Retreat – the easily spotted Mt. Banks (see map), the Wollengambe River (perhaps the clearest river in the Blue Mountains) and the stunning cliff-top views of the Upper Grose Valley (pictured above – see map). A little further away are the disused railway tunnels of the Newes area that are now home to thousands of spectacular glow worms (more info).

You don’t often hear about this secret region of the Blue Mountains yet it contains so many hidden gems that will easily impress those who are seeking a more easy going Blue Mountains escape.

Staying at Wollemi Wilderness Retreat you will have the best of both worlds – it’s close enough to the main Blue Mountains tourist attractions (as well as some of the lesser known) but far enough away to provide a place where you can retire from it all and enjoy the seclusion of the real Blue Mountains.
